The Friends have been given a donation of $35,000 from the Apostle Islands Historic Preservation Conservancy, to contribute to the reconstruction of the grand front porch on the R.D. Pike Building as exterior renovation begins this year! With this generous donation, we are delighted to announce that this effort has now reached 60% of the fundraising outreach for this phase of the ongoing restoration project!

The Apostle Islands Historic Preservation Conservancy (“AIHPC” for short) works to preserve and interpret the rich history and culture of the Apostle Islands. As a formal partner of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, AIHPC's primary focus is to support National Park Service efforts to preserve historic resources within the Lakeshore's boundaries, from archeological sites to fishing camps to lighthouses, and to help the park share the stories of the Islands’ people and places. AIHPC is especially interested in projects that help to increase visitor access to the islands and that enhance our understanding of their rich, complex histories. AIHPC also collaborates with other organizations to support their efforts to preserve significant historic resources and cultural traditions related to the Apostle Islands and to share them with residents and visitors through lectures, tours, museum exhibits, and other educational programs.

According to Jo Holt, the Executive Director of AIHPC, “..this donation aligns with AIHPC's mission by preserving a significant historic structure associated with one the Apostle Islands' most important historic and cultural themes-fish, and fishing. And the tours and educational programming that will be developed will draw visitors in to learn about some of the people, places (and fish!) that have played a large role in supporting the fishing industry over time, along with sharing the values of preserving our architectural history”.

When the R.D. Pike Building was constructed in 1897, it took effort from every facet of our communities to bring it across the finish line.  The same is true today as we move forward to Re-Awaken History!  We are extremely grateful to AIHPC for their faith in the project, their trust in our board, and in their shared sense of community involvement.  This is just delightful news! We thank Jo and the entire AIHPC board for their trust and their commitment to the vision of this project.
